Grupo 5

Formed in the early 1970s in Monsefú, in the Lambayeque region of northern Peru, Grupo 5 belongs to the tradition of Peruvian cumbia and cumbia norteña, firmly rooted in the popular tropical music of the north coast. Initially focused on local parties and ballroom orchestras, Grupo 5 gradually expanded to regional and then national stages, relying on a large lineup combining a rhythm section, keyboards, brass and several lead vocalists. Led by the Yaipén family, the group shifted toward a more urban cumbia from the 1990s onward, incorporating sounds close to tecnocumbia while retaining verse‑chorus structures and simple, singable melodic lines. Grupo 5’s songs favor romantic and melancholic lyrics centered on breakups, nostalgia and everyday life, supported by danceable arrangements designed for concert halls as well as popular celebrations. Over the decades, Grupo 5 has regularly renewed its singers and musicians, allowing it to refresh its repertoire while maintaining aesthetic continuity. Highly visible on the major cumbia stages in Peru and within Peruvian communities abroad, Grupo 5 has multiplied collaborations with salsa, Latin pop artists and other cumbia bands, consolidating an identity centered on tropical dance and modern cumbia.
