Jeanne Mas
Born in Alicante in 1958 and settled in France at a young age, Jeanne Mas turned to music after her studies and a prolonged stay in Italy, where she recorded her first singles in English and Italian and appeared on variety shows. Her return to France in the early 1980s marked a turning point: she made her name in a synthpop close to new wave, blended with francophone song, driven by electronic programming, danceable rhythms and a carefully constructed image. The albums Jeanne Mas (1985), Femmes d’aujourd’hui (1986) and Les crises de l’âme (1989) established a songwriting style in which immediate choruses, sentimental themes and a darker view of the intimate coexisted, often in collaboration with composer Romano Musumarra. Over the 1990s Jeanne Mas shifted toward a more rock-tinged pop and more organic atmospheres, while continuing to perform concerts and tours on French and francophone stages. From the 2000s onward she multiplied studio projects, explored a more introspective electronic pop, became more involved in producing her records and continued to alternate between new releases and returns to the stage, balancing historical repertoire with recent compositions.
