Gilbert O'Sullivan

Born in Waterford, Ireland, in 1946 and raised from childhood in Swindon, England, Gilbert O'Sullivan developed in the late 1960s a piano-centered pop songwriting style situated between soft rock, easy listening and orchestrated song. He attracted attention around 1970 with “Nothing Rhymed” and broadened his audience with “Alone Again (Naturally)”, “Clair” and “Get Down” — tracks that established an immediately identifiable melodic style, driven by a percussive piano approach and observational lyrics often laced with irony, everyday detail and wordplay. His early albums Himself (1971), Back to Front (1972) and I’m a Writer, Not a Fighter (1973) accompanied this period of international exposure, while the rest of his career saw him evolve his writing without abandoning that carefully constructed songwriting format. After a legal dispute with his former management in the early 1980s, Gilbert O'Sullivan continued to record across decades, notably Off Centre (1980), Gilbertville (2011), Gilbert O'Sullivan (2018), Driven (2022) and Songbook (2024). His name is also associated with a 1991 legal case over a sample of “Alone Again (Naturally)”, often cited in the history of music law.
