George Thorogood & The Destroyers
Rooted in the 1970s American rock scene, George Thorogood & The Destroyers formed in Wilmington, Delaware, around guitarist-singer George Thorogood and drummer Jeff Simon, with a pronounced grounding in blues rock, boogie, and rock and roll. The band first made a name for itself on the East Coast club circuit before releasing the album “George Thorogood and the Destroyers” in 1977, followed by “Move It on Over” in 1978, which showcased a straightforward slide-guitar approach, an amplified, hard-driving sound, and a repertoire mixing originals with covers of classics by John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, and Chuck Berry. With “More George Thorogood and the Destroyers” (1980) and then “Bad to the Bone” (1982), the group cemented an aesthetic centered on repetitive riffs, a tight, straight backbeat, and gritty vocals, rooted in electric blues and 1950s rock. Extensive touring — most notably the 1981 “50/50 Tour” crisscrossing the United States — established George Thorogood & The Destroyers as a dependable live presence on the rock and blues circuit, including opening slots on major international tours. Subsequent albums such as “Maverick” (1985) and “Born to Be Bad” (1988) carried that approach forward, occasionally adding FM/AOR rock touches while maintaining a solid blues foundation. Over the decades, despite lineup changes around the Thorogood–Simon core, the band has remained associated with a no-frills style built on simple structures, often brisk tempos, and bar-band energy geared toward live performance.
