James Taylor
Born in Boston (United States) in 1948 and raised in North Carolina, James Taylor emerged at the end of the 1960s at the intersection of folk rock and American soft rock, following the generation of singer-songwriters. After a period on the East Coast folk scene, he recorded his first eponymous album in London in 1968 for the Apple label, establishing a principle of acoustic songwriting centered on guitar and a soft-voiced timbre, supported by introspective lyrics. Taylor affirmed this style with Sweet Baby James (1970) and Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon (1971), which feature songs such as “Fire and Rain” and his rendition of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” emblematic of his blend of melancholic ballads, understated country, and pop influences. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he released successive studio albums and toured extensively, occasionally collaborating with fellow singer-songwriters. He continued this trajectory with later records such as Hourglass (1997), October Road (2002), Before This World (2015) and American Standard (2020), alternating new compositions with reinterpretations of standards and maintaining continuity between personal songwriting and the American songbook.
