James Carter

Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1969, James Carter belongs to the American jazz tradition while frequently making forays into the genre’s margins. A saxophonist and clarinetist active on the Detroit scene and, from the late 1980s, in New York, Carter gained attention in the early 1990s for a style that moves between swing, hard bop, free jazz, blues and soul. His first records as a leader, such as JC on the Set (1993) and Jurassic Classics (1994), established a repertoire in which reworked standards and original compositions coexist, while The Real Quietstorm (1995) refined a more intimate aesthetic. Carter later developed themed projects, notably Chasin’ the Gypsy (2000) exploring Django Reinhardt’s legacy and Gardenias for Lady Day (2003) as a tribute to Billie Holiday, underscoring his interest in reinterpreting historical jazz figures. At the same time he pursued numerous collaborations — including with Lester Bowie and Julius Hemphill — appearing both in quartet settings and with his James Carter Organ Trio. Recordings such as Live at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge (2004), Present Tense (2008), Caribbean Rhapsody (2011) and At the Crossroads (2011) attest to an ongoing focus on timbre and group dynamics, Carter alternating between saxophones and clarinets within a framework that balances tight arrangements and wide improvisational spaces.
