And Also the Trees
Formed in the late 1970s in the village of Inkberrow, Worcestershire, England, And Also the Trees initially emerged within the British post‑punk scene, showing a marked affinity for gothic aesthetics and cold wave. Built around brothers Simon Huw Jones (vocals) and Justin Jones (guitar), the band attracted attention in the early 1980s by exchanging demos with The Cure, which led to opening slots and to Laurence “Lol” Tolhurst becoming involved in the production of their self‑titled debut album in 1984. Subsequent records, including Virus Meadow (1986) and The Millpond Years (1988), established a style defined by melodic, textured guitars, a narrative vocal delivery and lyrics deeply rooted in rural landscapes and literary imagery. During the 1990s, with albums such as Green Is the Sea (1992) and The Klaxon (1993), their music shifted toward airier atmospheres, incorporating folk elements and slower tempos. Still active in the 21st century with releases like (Listen For) The Rag and Bone Man (2007), Born Into the Waves (2016) and The Bone Carver (2022), the band has continued a trajectory marked by a sustained attention to atmosphere, favouring tours in the UK and continental Europe and maintaining a dynamic centred on the core founding members.
