Férré Gola

Born in Kinshasa in 1976, Hervé Gola Bataringue, known as Férré Gola (often spelled Ferré Gola) and also called “Jésus de nuances,” is rooted in the tradition of Congolese rumba and ndombolo while directing them toward a more contemporary songwriting approach. Discovered in 1995 by Werrason, he first joined Wenge Musica and then continued with Wenge Musica Maison Mère from 1998 to 2004, a period during which he refined a melodic vocal style strongly focused on choir arrangements and timbre variations. After leaving the group, he briefly joined Koffi Olomidé’s Quartier Latin in 2005–2006, experiencing a Kinshasa scene oriented toward large ensembles and international tours, before embarking on a solo career from 2006. His debut album, “Sens Interdit,” was released in early 2007 and established his name in the urban Congolese music scene. As a songwriter, singer, dancer and producer, he developed a repertoire where slow rumba sits alongside faster, ndombolo-leaning tracks, with lyrics that range from sentimental narratives to everyday chronicle and references to Kinshasa’s social codes. On stage, his performances are built around choreographic work inherited from the major Congolese formations and have taken him to venues across Africa and internationally, notably in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania.
