Heavenly
Formed in Oxford, England, in the late 1980s, Heavenly emerged in the wake of Talulah Gosh around singer-songwriter Amelia Fletcher, with Peter Momtchiloff, Cathy Rogers, Rob Pursey, and Matthew Fletcher. Rooted in the British indie pop and twee pop movements, the band cultivated a melodic songwriting style driven by chiming guitars, distinctive vocal harmonies, and lyrics that weave together romantic narratives, wry observations of everyday life, and feminist concerns. Initially associated with the Sarah Records label, Heavenly released Heavenly vs. Satan in 1991 and Le Jardin de Heavenly in 1992, which established the group on the Anglophone independent scene. The Decline and Fall of Heavenly (1994) and Operation Heavenly (1996) extended this aesthetic, intensifying the contrast between an apparent lightness and darker undertones. Active on the British indie circuit and connected to the international scene oriented toward lo-fi pop, Heavenly ceased activity following the death of drummer Matthew Fletcher in 1996, while remaining linked to its members’ subsequent projects in other bands.
