Groundation
Originating in Sonoma County in Northern California, Groundation formed in the late 1990s around singer–guitarist Harrison Stafford, initially within Sonoma University's jazz program. The band developed a roots reggae sound nourished by improvisation, jazz harmonies and an extensive horn section, with tracks built in long structures where dub influences, syncopated rhythms and extended instrumental passages intersect. The lyrics address spirituality, the heritage of the Rastafari movement and social issues, in an aesthetic that clearly references 1970s Jamaican reggae while remaining rooted in a North American context. After their debut Young Tree (1999), Groundation drew attention with Each One Teach One (2001) and Hebron Gate (2002), which established a formula blending impassioned vocals, horn arrangements and dialogues between keyboards and guitar. The discography continued with Upon the Bridge (2006), Building an Ark (2012), A Miracle (2014), The Next Generation (2018) and One Rock (2022), marking different configurations of the collective around Stafford. The band has occasionally collaborated with roots-reggae veterans such as Don Carlos or singers from the I-Threes, and has built much of its trajectory on a sustained live presence across North America, Europe and Latin America.
