Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a Montreal‑based band that has become one of the major forces in contemporary post‑rock, known for its long, orchestral compositions threaded with political tension. Formed in the mid‑1990s around Efrim Menuck, the group built a vast, cinematic sound combining drone guitars, strings, field recordings and monumental crescendos. Their first album F♯A♯∞ laid the foundations of a dark, apocalyptic universe, extended by Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, regarded as a landmark of the genre. After a long hiatus, GY!BE returned with Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!, followed by Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress and G_d’s Pee at State’s End!, confirming a trajectory in which political protest is conveyed as much through noisy textures as through the militant visuals projected during concerts. Seldom covered by the media and fiercely independent, the collective remains a cult formation whose performances—closer to electric ceremonies than to mere concerts—continue to leave a lasting mark on the experimental scene.
