Duncan Dhu
Formed in San Sebastián, in the Spanish Basque Country, Duncan Dhu initially brought together Mikel Erentxun, Diego Vasallo and Juan Ramón Viles around a repertoire that set itself apart from parts of the mid-1980s local scene with its acoustic approach, straddling pop rock, rockabilly, folk rock, soft rock and touches of country. After Por tierras escocesas in 1985 and Canciones in 1986, Duncan Dhu established itself in the Spanish-speaking landscape with tracks such as Cien gaviotas, Esos ojos negros and En algún lugar, carried by direct melodic writing and sober arrangements. Becoming a duo from 1989 with Erentxun and Vasallo, Duncan Dhu then broadened its format, notably on Autobiografía (1989), where the two voices take more space, followed by Supernova (1991), which introduced a wider and more rhythmic sound. The group continued with Piedras (1994), the live Teatro Victoria Eugenia (1995) and Crepúsculo (2001), before a prolonged hiatus and then an occasional return with El Duelo (2013). Throughout its career, Duncan Dhu moved between spare songs, guitar-pop and more electric atmospheres, maintaining a singular balance between melodic sense, intimate tonalities and the heritage of Spanish rock.
