Gilbert Montagné
Born in Paris in 1951, Gilbert Montagné established himself over the decades as a central singer-songwriter and pianist in francophone popular music, with a repertoire that blends pop, disco and soul influences. Blind from birth, he trained at the piano from an early age and began performing as a teenager, before signing his first recordings in the late 1960s. Montagné first drew attention in the early 1970s with the English-language track 'The Fool', which opened doors to European stages; he then gradually steered his career toward French-language songs built on straightforward melodies and memorable choruses. In the 1980s he fully embraced the French dance-pop and disco wave with a series of upbeat singles, often focused on themes of love and celebration, which firmly established his name in the musical landscape. Alongside studio work, he maintained an active concert schedule in France, across Europe and throughout the francophone world, with his piano playing remaining central to his performances. From the 1990s onward he alternated tours, compilations, new studio projects and occasional collaborations, continuing to revisit his repertoire on stage within a popular-variety aesthetic marked by the prominence of keyboard and voice.
