Geneva

Formed in Aberdeen in 1992 around Andrew Montgomery, Steven Dora, Stuart Evans, Keith Graham and Douglas Caskie, Geneva belongs to the late-1990s British rock scene with a sound that mixes alternative rock, indie rock, indie pop and an art-rock sensibility rooted in the post-Britpop context. Initially active under other names before adopting Geneva, the band was noticed in the mid-1990s and signed to Nude Records in 1996. Geneva released the singles "No One Speaks" and "Into the Blue", followed by the album Further in 1997, where melodic guitars, a dark tension, clear choruses and a high, melancholy vocal coexist. Present on the British indie circuit at the time, Geneva continued with tours and releases until Weather Underground in 2000, a second album that is tighter and more atmospheric, issued after a difficult period with their label. The band split the same year, then returned to activity in 2018 with a stage comeback led by Montgomery, Dora, Graham and Caskie, without Stuart Evans. Geneva remains associated with concise, nervy and elegiac songwriting at the crossroads of guitar pop and more introspective rock.
