DJ Quik
Active on Compton’s hip‑hop scene since the late 1980s, DJ Quik, born David Marvin Blake, established himself as a rapper, DJ and producer within the West Coast movement. Spotted through the local mixtape circuit, he released his debut studio album "Quik Is the Name" in 1991, characterized by a g‑funk sound that blended funk basslines, melodic keyboards and lyrics rooted in Los Angeles neighborhoods; this was followed by "Way 2 Fonky" (1992) and "Safe + Sound" (1995). In the late 1990s his work moved toward smoother, more melodic productions with "Rhythm-al-ism" (1998) and "Balance & Options" (2000), where he honed a style combining funk groove, soul influences and arrangements close to R&B. Alongside his own albums — including "Under tha Influence" (2002), "Trauma" (2005), "The Book of David" (2011) and "The Midnight Life" (2014) — DJ Quik built a sustained career as a producer and audio engineer for the American rap scene, particularly on the West Coast. Collaborative projects such as "Blaqkout" with Kurupt (2009) and "Rosecrans" with Problem (2016) further cemented a trajectory in which DJ Quik’s aesthetic remains linked to melodic, funk‑infused hip‑hop closely tied to Compton’s musical history.
