Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen
Born in 2012 between Hamburg and Berlin, Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen follows directly in the wake of Superpunk, from whom the singer-songwriter Carsten Friedrichs as well as the bassist Tim Jürgens can be found. The band develops a German pop nourished by northern soul, garage rock and a touch of punk, with songs featuring lively melodies, danceable rhythms and lyrics focused on daily life, cultural margins and small social facts. Around Friedrichs, Gunther Buskies on keyboards gathered, then various musicians who passed through guitar and drums, the lineup finding over the years a solid group balance between pop choruses, band energy and references to British soul and the Motown sound of the 1960s. Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen released in the same year their first album, Jeder auf Erden ist wunderschön (2012), followed by Alle Ampeln auf Gelb (2014), Rüttel mal am Käfig, die Affen sollen was machen! (2016), It’s OK to Love DLDGG (2017), Fuck Dance, Let’s Art (2019), Gschichterln aus dem Park Café (2021), the compilation Alleine auf Partys – 18 gewöhnliche „Hits“ (2022) and Egg Benedict (2025). In parallel to their own records, Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen also accompanied Andreas Dorau on Aus der Bibliothèque in 2014, a reference that clearly illuminates their grounding in literate, ironic German pop and in the culture of independent scenes.
