Flea
Born in Melbourne in 1962 and relocating to Los Angeles at a young age, Flea (Michael Peter Balzary) made his mark on the local punk and funk scenes before co‑founding the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the early 1980s, a band with which he developed a style that blends slap‑bass funk, punk energy, and prominent melodic lines. Over the decades, he has evolved this vocabulary toward a more harmonic and sometimes introspective register, weaving in jazz and alternative rock influences while maintaining a strong grounding in groove. Alongside the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea has pursued more low‑key solo work and, in 2012, released the experimental EP “Helen Burns,” where he explores more orchestral and atmospheric writing. A highly sought‑after studio bassist, he has collaborated on occasion with Alanis Morissette, Johnny Cash, Patti Smith, and Thom Yorke, and has contributed to numerous recordings connected to the experimental rock sphere and the Californian alternative scene. Also active on screen, Flea has, since the late 1980s, appeared in both independent and mainstream films, and is involved in music education in Los Angeles through the Silverlake Conservatory of Music.
