Flamin' Groovies

Formed in San Francisco in 1965 around Roy Loney, Cyril Jordan and George Alexander, the Flamin' Groovies emerged in the wake of 1950s rock'n'roll, garage rock and a raw sound that often places them among bands associated with proto-punk. After the EP Sneakers in 1968, the Flamin' Groovies released Supersnazz in 1969, Flamingo in 1970 and Teenage Head in 1971 — three records marked by a blend of rhythm and blues, edgy rock and influences from the Rolling Stones and Detroit. Roy Loney's departure in 1971, and his replacement by Chris Wilson, altered the band's balance: the repertoire shifted toward more melodic songwriting informed by the British Invasion, without abandoning its original energy. Based for a time in the UK, the Flamin' Groovies recorded with Dave Edmunds and released Shake Some Action in 1976, Flamin' Groovies Now in 1978 and Jumpin' in the Night in 1979 — a period when their incisive power pop moved between pub rock, punk and classic rock scenes. After several lineup changes and more sporadic activity in the 1980s, the band split in 1991 before reforming in 2013 around Cyril Jordan, Chris Wilson and George Alexander. That reunion led to Fantastic Plastic in 2017, and the Flamin' Groovies have since continued performing, carrying forward the legacy they built between San Francisco, London and the independent rock scene.
