Deekline

Born in London, Deekline came up in the British underground electronic scene through parties, raves and pirate radio, initially around drum and bass before broadening his palette to UK garage, breakbeat, jungle and a more hybrid form of bass music. He is often linked to the emergence of breakstep, a crossover between 2-step garage, breaks and heavy basslines, crystallized in the late 1990s with the single “I Don’t Smoke,” released in 1999 and later charting in the UK in 2000. During that period he also ran the Rat Records label, supporting his work as a producer and DJ in London. His subsequent career has moved across club formats from breakbeat to jungle, featuring regular collaborations with Wizard — notably on Breaks, Beats and Blondes (2004) — and later with Ed Solo on ragga jungle and bass music projects. He has also worked with Tim Healey, including on “The Mexican” (2010), and in 2009 he launched the Jungle Cakes label dedicated to jungle and bass sounds. Deekline’s tracks often blend vocal samples, broken rhythms, garage energy and hip‑hop or dancehall references, conceived for the club but not limited to a single register.
