Femi Kuti
Born in London in 1962 and raised in Lagos, Femi Kuti continues the Afrobeat legacy started by his father Fela Kuti while presenting it in a more contemporary guise. After beginning his career with the group Egypt 80 in the late 1970s, he formed his own band, The Positive Force, in 1986, developing an Afrobeat infused with highlife, funk, jazz and Yoruba rhythms. His discography opens with the album “Femi Kuti” (1995), followed by “Shoki Shoki” (1998), “Fight to Win” (2001), the live album “Africa Shrine” (2004), “Day by Day” (2008), “Africa for Africa” (2010), “No Place for My Dream” (2013), “One People One World” (2018) and the project “Legacy+” (2021), shared with Made Kuti. Femi Kuti’s tracks combine repetitive brass sections, long groove-based structures and vocal lines in English, Pidgin and Yoruba, with lyrics often addressing social and political issues in Nigeria. Based in Lagos, Femi Kuti performs regularly at the New Afrika Shrine and tours extensively across European, African and American stages, from clubs and festivals to larger venues.
