Father John Misty
Under the name Father John Misty, American singer-songwriter Joshua Tillman has, since the early 2010s, developed a body of work that blends folk, indie rock and orchestral pop influences. Born in Rockville, Maryland, and active on the Seattle scene—where he was the drummer for Fleet Foxes from 2008 to 2012—he initially recorded as J. Tillman before refocusing his songwriting under the Father John Misty persona. The project took shape in Los Angeles with the 2012 album Fear Fun, noted for a shift toward more psychedelic arrangements and a strong narrative voice. He continued in this vein with I Love You, Honeybear (2015) and Pure Comedy (2017), albums of often long, detailed songs that combine folk balladry, chamber-pop-style orchestration and more electric passages. In 2018, God’s Favorite Customer tightened the format with more direct compositions, while Chloë and the Next 20th Century (2022) introduced greater nods to crooner traditions and mid-20th-century popular music. On stage, Father John Misty appears either with a full band or accompanied by orchestras, performing in clubs, concert halls and international festivals. Joshua Tillman also contributes occasionally as a writer or collaborator with other indie and pop musicians, while keeping Father John Misty as the main framework for his songwriting.
