Daniel Lanois
Born in Hull, Quebec, in 1951 and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Daniel Lanois developed an early studio-based sensibility for sound before establishing himself from the 1980s onward as a producer and musician working between atmospheric rock, folk, ambient and cinematic sonic textures. His career has been built both through his own projects and through production work with artists such as Brian Eno, U2, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris, which places Lanois at the intersection of songcraft, experimentation and a highly sculpted approach to sonic space. As a solo artist he released Acadie (1989), For the Beauty of Wynona (1993), Shine (2003), Belladonna (2005), Here Is What Is (2007), Goodbye to Language (2010), Flesh and Machine (2014), Heavy Sun (2021) and Player, Piano (2022). His music blends treated guitars, pedal steel, hushed vocals, slow pulses and instrumental atmospheres, with writing that moves from songs to more meditative forms. Lanois has also extended this work to the stage, film and various collaborative projects, maintaining a spare, organic aesthetic open to improvisation.
