DAF
Formed in Düsseldorf in 1978 around the Ratinger Hof scene, DAF—Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft—began as a larger group before narrowing to the duo Gabi Delgado-López and Robert Görl from 1981. DAF developed a writing and sound at the crossroads of electropunk, Neue Deutsche Welle, EBM and a spare industrial minimalism, characterized by German, chanted vocals, dry rhythms, repetitive sequences and a constant tension between physical impulse and mechanical coldness. After the more abrasive debuts Ein Produkt der Deutsch-Amerikanischen Freundschaft (1979) and Die Kleinen und die Bösen (1980), DAF spent time in London and released on Virgin a central trilogy produced by Conny Plank: Alles ist gut (1981), Gold und Liebe (1981) and Für immer (1982). DAF’s lyrics relied on repetition, slogan-like phrasing, political ambiguity and sexuality within an intentionally stripped-down format. The group reformed intermittently—most notably for 1st Step to Heaven (1986), their only English-language album, and later Fünfzehn neue D.A.F.-Lieder (2003), where they reactivated their idiom and opened it to more contemporary electronics. After several returns to the stage from 2008, the death of Gabi Delgado-López in 2020 marked the end of the historic duo; Robert Görl still issued Nur Noch Einer in 2021 drawn from the band’s archives.
