Crash Test Dummies
Formed in Winnipeg, Canada, in the mid‑1980s, Crash Test Dummies coalesced around Brad Roberts’s baritone voice, Ellen Reid’s keyboards and vocals, Dan Roberts’s bass, and the multi‑instrumental contributions of Benjamin Darvill, with drummer Mitch Dorge joining in the early 1990s. Straddling alternative rock, folk rock, and pop with country inflections, the band drew notice with The Ghosts That Haunt Me (1991), marked by acoustic arrangements and narrative songwriting tinged with irony. Crash Test Dummies then broadened their audience with God Shuffled His Feet (1993), whose songs rest on moderate tempos, carefully crafted vocal harmonies, and lyrics that are both everyday and metaphysical, before moving to a more electric, experimental sound on A Worm’s Life (1996) and a more pop‑ and groove‑oriented approach on Give Yourself a Hand (1999). Subsequent releases, from I Don’t Care That You Don’t Mind (2001) to Oooh La La! (2010), explore more intimate formats, folk ballads, and thematic projects, while the band alternates North American and European tours with periods of hiatus, maintaining an occasional live presence centered on a repertoire that blends early material with more recent compositions.
