Maizie Williams
Born in Brades on the island of Montserrat, Maizie Williams grows up between the Caribbean and Birmingham, England, before settling in West Germany in the mid-1970s. Her career develops first between modelling, dancing and the music scene, then takes on an international dimension with Boney M., a disco group produced by Frank Farian, of which she becomes one of its faces from 1975. In this group built around a blend of disco, Eurodisco and danceable pop, Maizie Williams mainly occupies a stage and visual role within a quartet characterized by strong staging and by a complex flow of voices between studio work and public performances. After the classic period of Boney M., Maizie Williams continues to perform the group's repertoire live with her own formation, within nostalgic tours and circuits devoted to disco music of the 1970s and 1980s. Parallel to this, Maizie Williams records a more personal facet with the gospel album Call Upon Jesus in 2006, which shows another facet of her musical career. Her discography under her own name also includes several reinterpretations and remixes tied to the Boney M. heritage, including Sunny and Josephine Baker. Present on stage for several decades, Maizie Williams remains associated with a European disco aesthetic nourished by pop, Caribbean rhythms and a more spiritual register in her solo projects.
