Towards the Sinister

Formed around several former members of My Dying Bride, Towards the Sinister reunites vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe, founding members Calvin Robertshaw and Rick Miah, as well as original bassist Adrian Jackson, all linked to the founding period of the Halifax-based group in West Yorkshire, England. The project sits within the death-doom and gothic doom metal spheres, with a repertoire centered on the early years of My Dying Bride and a writing style marked by slow tempos, thick guitars, a funeral-like atmosphere and a vocal that alternates gravity and melodic tension. Towards the Sinister mainly reinterprets tracks from the albums As the Flower Withers (1992), Turn Loose the Swans (1993), The Angel and the Dark River (1995) and Like Gods of the Sun (1996), i.e., a pivotal sequence in the evolution of British doom metal in the 1990s. More than a new band in the classical sense, Towards the Sinister operates as a stage re-interpretation carried by the musicians who participated in shaping this sound, reviving on stage a dark, slow and melancholic aesthetic that has marked the history of extreme metal.
