Colin James
Straddling electric blues and rock, Canadian musician Colin James has, since the late 1980s, built a career marked by shifts between full-band formats and more intimate projects. Born Colin James Munn in 1964 in Regina, Saskatchewan, he drew attention early on in the Canadian blues scene and toured as an opening act for Stevie Ray Vaughan before permanently adopting the name Colin James. Based in Vancouver, he released a self-titled debut in 1988, rooted in blues rock with punchy riffs and soulful vocals, followed by 1990’s Sudden Stop, which cemented his presence on North American stages. Beginning with 1993’s Colin James and the Little Big Band, he opened a swing and jump‑blues chapter with a horn section, which he would extend over several installments while simultaneously issuing more roots‑oriented records such as National Steel (1997), recorded with Colin Linden in an acoustic vein. Albums like Traveler (2003), Limelight (2005), Blue Highways (2016), and Open Road (2021) chart the evolution of a repertoire where interpretations of the blues canon meet original compositions, radio‑leaning rock, and forays into retro swing. Onstage, Colin James alternates power‑trio shows, expanded big‑band‑style lineups, and more stripped‑down configurations, maintaining close ties to the blues and jazz festival circuit in Canada, Europe, and the United States.
