Thomas Kjellerup

Born in Odder, Denmark, in 1958, Thomas Kjellerup has since the 1980s developed a career as a singer and songwriter in the field of Danish songs, between acoustic folk, ballad, and the tradition of visesang. After a period under the name Rup & Stub, he released several solo albums, including Nu Kommer Dagen Stille (1987), En Sang Alene (1989) and Ved Siden Af Mig (1991), the latter an album associated with his broader emergence thanks to the song 'Annis sang'. Kjellerup writes most of his repertoire himself, with a writing approach focused on narrative, everyday feelings and simple imagery, carried by sober melodies and direct interpretation. His discography also includes Nu Er Julen Begyndt (1990), Nu Er Ventetiden Forbi (1993), Troubadour (1995), Sommerhus (1999), Skrøbelige Hjerte (2002) and Høstfest (2018). Among the most recognizable titles in his catalog are also 'Jeg tror der findes nisser', 'Juliette', 'Bjørnen vågner' (to a text by Benny Andersen), and 'Så smuk som i går'. Kjellerup thus sits within a strand of Danish singer-songwriters committed to textual clarity and a spare musical form.
