Chuck Prophet

Born in Whittier, California, Chuck Prophet first made his name in the 1980s with Green on Red, an American band straddling psychedelic rock, desert rock and country roots, with which he recorded several albums before embarking on a long solo career. Based in San Francisco, Prophet went on to develop a songwriting style rooted in American rock, alt‑country and a taut form of Americana, driven by direct guitars, spare melodies and a strong narrative sense. His solo discography begins with Brother Aldo (1990) and runs through No Other Love (2002) and Age of Miracles (2004) to Soap and Water (2007), Temple Beautiful (2012), an album devoted to San Francisco, Night Surfer (2014), Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins (2017) and The Land That Time Forgot (2020). Chuck Prophet regularly collaborates with Stephanie Finch, who appears in his band The Mission Express, and he also pursues side projects and co‑writing and production partnerships with artists such as Kelly Willis, Alejandro Escovedo and The Rubinoos. In 2024 he released Wake the Dead with Qiensave, a record that introduces a cumbia inflection into his repertoire without breaking from his rock foundation.
