Cigarettes for Breakfast

Based in Philadelphia, Cigarettes for Breakfast has developed around musician Matt Whiteford, initially as a bedroom project before taking the stage as a band. The name Cigarettes for Breakfast circulates in a shoegaze and dream pop register, with saturated and diffuse guitars, melodies drowned in reverb, and writing that preserves a pop foundation beneath hazy textures. The first singles and EPs released between 2020 and 2021 establish this DIY frame, with a still-raw sound and handmade releases. In 2023, Cigarettes for Breakfast released the album Join the Circus, developed with former project members and mixer Jeff Zeigler, marking a more constructed milestone in its discography. In 2025 Slow Motion appeared, an album written, recorded, performed and mixed by Matt Whiteford, except for the drum parts performed by Anthony Rossi, cofounder of the project. As it has evolved, Cigarettes for Breakfast has also become a live trio with Matt Whiteford, Anthony Rossi and Martin Buechler, and has shared the stage with groups from the shoegaze, dream pop and indie scenes such as Alison’s Halo, Slow Crush, Blackwater Holylight or Clarion. A new EP, colour wheel, is announced for 2026 and extends this approach with discreet psychedelia, guitar textures and handmade production.
