DJ Andy Smith

Based in Bristol, DJ Andy Smith has established himself at the crossroads of hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae and rare collectible music, with a digger approach that blends breaks, old-school rap, Northern Soul, boogaloo and Jamaican rhythms. His career remains closely linked to Portishead, for whom he supplied sampled material on the first two albums before becoming the band's touring DJ, in a role that highlights his taste for scratching, style-collages and selections built like narratives. Andy Smith also made his mark with The Document in 1998, a mix album released on a major label, followed by Document 2 and Document 3, which extend this principle of free circulation between soul classics, pop curiosities, hip-hop and obscure grooves. Over the 2000s and 2010s, DJ Andy Smith developed in parallel a compiling work centered on his preferred fields, from The Trojan Document in 2006 to Andy Smith's Northern Soul, Lets Boogaloo Vol. 4, Diggin in the BGP Vaults, New Orleans Funk, Jamaica Funk or Reach Up: Disco Wonderland in 2017. He also produced with Scott Hendy under the name Dynamo Productions, notably on the Analogue album. In clubs, DJ Andy Smith defends an open format, nourished by sound system culture as much as by the history of Black American and British music.
