Christian Vander
Born in Nogent‑sur‑Marne in 1948, Christian Vander emerged on the French scene in the late 1960s as a drummer, pianist, singer and composer, before founding Magma in 1969. With that group he established zeuhl, an aesthetic that blends progressive rock, modal jazz, choral writing, rhythmic ostinatos and the tension of contemporary music, often delivered through Kobaïan, a language he created for that universe. Albums such as Magma (1970), 1001° Centigrades (1971), Mekanïk Destruktïẁ Kommandöh (1973) and Köhntarkösz (1974) outline its early forms. Over the decades Vander has developed this music in electric lineups, vocal ensembles and formats closer to jazz, while also creating Offering, a project more focused on singing and the legacy of John Coltrane. Surrounded at various times by musicians such as Stella Vander, Jannick Top and Bernard Paganotti, Christian Vander occupies a lasting place at the crossroads of jazz‑rock, progressive music and vocal experimentation.
