Chris Norman
Born in 1950 in Redcar in northern England, Chris Norman first made his mark on the British rock scene as the singer and guitarist of Smokie, a 1970s pop-rock band known for its melodic soft-rock sound with country touches. With Smokie he was part of a string of radio-friendly singles before leaving the group in the early 1980s to pursue a solo career. His solo work moved into pop-rock and adult contemporary territory, focusing on ballads and mid-tempo songs, with his slightly husky voice as a defining feature. The 1986 single “Midnight Lady,” written and produced by Dieter Bohlen, appeared on the album Some Hearts Are Diamonds the same year and firmly established him on German-speaking and European stages. Norman went on to release several albums, including Different Shades in 1987, while maintaining ties to his Smokie past through setlists and various tours. His career also includes occasional collaborations, notably the duet with Suzi Quatro on “Stumblin’ In” (1978), illustrating his position at the crossroads of rock, pop and international radio-friendly songwriting.
