Jim White

Born in California in 1957 and raised in Pensacola, Florida, Jim White developed a writing style nourished by the American South—its social landscapes, Pentecostal culture, and a decentralised form of Americana where alt-country, folk, country rock and gospel-tinged accents intersect. He first appeared on record in the late 1990s with Wrong-Eyed Jesus (1997); his music blends sung narration, marginal characters, dry humor and often spare melodies, with a pronounced taste for oblique arrangements. White continues this trajectory with No Such Place (2001), Drill a Hole in That Substrate and Tell Me What You See (2004), and Transnormal Skiperoo (2007), alternating intimate formats with productions more open to pop, roots or lightly experimental textures. His career also includes several collaborations and side projects, notably Hellwood with Johnny Dowd and Willie B, Mama Lucky with Tucker Martine and Linda Delgado, and Jim White vs. The Packway Handle Band, moving toward a more bluegrass register. After Where It Hits You (2012), White released Waffles, Triangles & Jesus (2017), Misfit’s Jubilee (2020), and later contributed to other projects as author and producer. On stage, White performs both solo and with a band, in a setup where songs remain central, balancing Southern folk, discreet spoken word and contemporary American detours.
