Dorian Concept

Born in Vienna in 1984 under the name Oliver Thomas Johnson, Dorian Concept has since the mid-2000s developed music situated between electronic, jazz, broken beat, abstract hip hop and funk, with a marked taste for improvisation and shifting textures. Noticed very early through his online performance videos and his early EPs, he emerged on the European beat scene at the end of the 2000s, before his tracks were circulated by Benji B and Gilles Peterson, which quickly led him to international festivals and stages related to experimental electronic. His first album When Planets Explode appeared in 2009, followed by Joined Ends in 2014 on Ninja Tune, where his writing became denser and more melodic, then The Nature of Imitation in 2018 and What We Do For Others in 2022 on Brainfeeder. Dorian Concept has also toured as a keyboardist alongside Flying Lotus, collaborated with The Cinematic Orchestra and participated in the Viennese band JSBL, which illuminates the very organic relationship he maintains with live playing. His music combines broken rhythms, jazz harmonies, sinuous keyboard lines and detailed electronic construction, in a format that oscillates between a deconstructed club track, an instrumental composition and a sound study.
