Société Étrange

Based in Lyon, Société Étrange brings together Antoine Bellini, Romain Hervault and Jonathan Grandcollot in a trio format where bass, drums, machines and electronic textures organize around extended instrumental forms. Since the 2010s the group has developed a language situated between krautrock, repetitive music, instrumental trance and electronic music, with a marked affinity for cyclical motifs, slow progressions and rhythms that advance through accumulation. Société Étrange threads in its tracks a continuous tension between rock pulsation and hypnotic drift, without aiming for song format. The trio's discography notably includes Au Revoir (2017), then Chance (2020), before Heat, released in 2024 by Les Disques Bongo Joe, Carton Records and Standard In-Fi. Through these releases, Société Étrange refines a sober, physical aesthetic, built on repetition, sonic matter and a very prominent bass, in a register that dialogues as much with certain experimental scenes as with the most minimalist dance music. Active on French and European independent scenes, Société Étrange continues a coherent path at the crossroads of motorik rock, electronics and structured improvisation.
