Chevreuil

Born in Nantes at the end of the 1990s, Chevreuil brings together Julien F. and Tony C., whom they met at the École des beaux-arts before forming this duo in 1998. Their trajectory sits at the crossroads of experimental rock, noise rock, math rock and an approach rooted in contemporary art, with work centered on repetition, rhythmic tension and the organization of the sonic space. From its beginnings Chevreuil develops a singular live setup, conceived as an autonomous form closer to a performative installation than to a classic rock band, where the circulation of sound and the arrangement of instruments fully participate in the music. Drums and guitar build short, interlocking and often cyclical motifs, in a dry, physical and precise writing, made of ruptures, loops and minimal variations. Active on French and European indie scenes, Chevreuil established itself in contexts linked to experimental music as much as to DIY circuits, keeping a rigorous and uncluttered aesthetic. Its discography notably includes Chien vert, chien noir (2002), Sports (2004) and Ghetto Blaster (2009), which document the evolution of a tense, abstract instrumental language that is nonetheless very concrete in its impact.
