Don Carlos

Born in Kingston in 1952, Jamaican singer Don Carlos, born Euvin Spencer, is part of the roots reggae tradition that emerged from the Waterhouse neighborhood. After early beginnings on the local scene, he co-founded the trio Black Uhuru in 1974 with Rudolph “Garth” Dennis and Derrick “Duckie” Simpson, but left the group soon after to pursue a solo career and develop the Don Carlos and Gold project. In the early 1980s he asserted his identity with albums such as "Suffering" (1981) and "Day to Day Living" (1982), where contemplative reggae, driven by a supple, clear voice, blends spiritual themes, social commentary and love songs. Don Carlos reunited with Black Uhuru in the late 1980s and helped revive the band with the albums "Now" (1990) and "Iron Storm" (1991), before returning definitively to his solo work, notably with "Seven Days a Week" in 1997. Alternating studio work and concerts with various line-ups, Don Carlos remains associated with a classic roots-reggae aesthetic tinged with lovers rock and continues to perform on international reggae and sound-system stages.
