Luke Stewart
Born in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and active between Washington, D.C., and New York, Luke Stewart has built a career at the crossroads of free jazz, the avant-garde, free improvisation, noise, post-rock, and art punk. A bassist, double bassist, composer and improviser, he first trained on several instruments before making the bass the center of a practice marked by Washington's independent scenes. Luke Stewart has also played an organizing role within CapitalBop, an organization dedicated to highlighting jazz in D.C., which illuminates his enduring involvement in collective networks and alternative contexts of dissemination. His discography ranges from solo work to numerous ensembles, with notable personal work heard on Works for Upright Bass and Amplifier (2018), then within the Luke Stewart Exposure Quintet (2020) and Luke Stewart’s Silt Trio, whose The Bottom appeared in 2022 and Unknown Rivers in 2024. In parallel, Stewart is a member of Irreversible Entanglements, a group formed in 2015 with Camae Ayewa, Keir Neuringer, Aquiles Navarro and Tcheser Holmes, as well as projects like Blacks’ Myths, a duo with Trae Crudup, or Heart of the Ghost. His playing favors textures, rhythmic tension, raw energy and open constructions, in a language where composition and improvisation remain closely linked.
