Silk
Led by Michael Smyth, a guitarist and songwriter who previously played with Virgins in Ireland, Silk develops a solo project focused on indie rock writing nourished by shoegaze and dream pop. Michael Smyth handles alone the composition, the performance and the recording, in an approach that privileges highly saturated guitars, thick layers and recessed vocals, for a result that is dense, melodic and vaporous. Silk sits within a wall-of-sound aesthetics where the tension of alternative rock meets floating textures, without losing the sense of the chorus. The project emerged in the early 2020s and circulated quickly in independent scenes attentive to new forms of contemporary shoegaze. On its early releases, Silk refines a balance between power and fog, with tracks built around simple progressions, layers of distortion, and an introspective atmosphere. Silk thus prolongs Michael Smyth's journey in a more personal format, where the entire creative process rests on a single musician while preserving the sonic breadth of a band.
