Denyo

Born in Hamburg in 1977 under the name Dennis Lisk, Denyo spent part of his childhood in Lagos, Nigeria, before returning to Germany — a trajectory that is part of the personal history of an artist linked to the Hamburg scene. Denyo emerged in the mid-1990s with Absolute Beginner, later known as Beginner, a central act in German rap, and is one of its voices with a smooth flow, often more measured than demonstrative, at the crossroads of hip-hop, soul and touches of reggae. As a solo artist, Denyo developed a more melodic approach to songwriting and a less confrontational sound: Minidisco in 2001 under the name Denyo77, The Denyos in 2005, Suchen & Finden in 2009 under his civil name Dennis Lisk, and Derbe in 2015. Since 2001 Denyo has also taken part in the collective Brothers Keepers, which arose from an anti-racist mobilization and brings together artists from rap, reggae and soul. Between group projects, solo albums and occasional collaborations with contemporaries such as Jan Delay or Nico Suave, Denyo remains associated with a strand of German rap that favors groove, clarity of lyrics and productions open to soul and dub influences.
