Teilhard Frost
Raised on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Teilhard Frost developed an early, direct connection to traditional music through the region’s older fiddlers. His musical path began in childhood with the jaw harp and harmonica, before the violin took a lasting place in his practice, nourished in particular by a repertoire of Kentucky fiddle tunes. Attached to Appalachian old-time music, Teilhard Frost approaches its forms as a multi-instrumentalist and instrument maker, attentive to sound, ensemble playing and transmission. As a teenager he settled in southern Ontario, where he turned for a time to saxophone and percussion, setting the violin aside for more than ten years. That period led him to co-found Klave Y Kongo, an ensemble devoted to Cuban folk musics, with which he played for a decade and crossed paths with artists such as Eliades Ochoa and Cuarteto Patria. Afterwards he returned to his great-grandfather’s violin and renewed his connection to old airs, in a register where Canadian tradition, Appalachian heritage and rhythmic experience acquired elsewhere meet.
