Sura Susso
Born in Gambia, Sura Susso grew up in a family of griots, the West African tradition in which the transmission of memory, stories and local identities takes place through singing, music and poetry. The son of kora player Mamudou Susso and singer-percussionist Fatou Binta Cissokho, Sura Susso embraced this Manding heritage early on and extends it into a more contemporary form of expression. His artistic world rests on the kora, song and West African rhythms, with an openness to other musical forms while preserving the acoustic and narrative fabric of the griot tradition. Over the course of his career, Sura Susso has developed a repertoire where Manding music, folk and contemporary influences intersect, in a format that places equal emphasis on cultural transmission and on the dialogue between family heritage and personal creation.
