Amsterdam
Formed in Liverpool in 1999 around singer and guitarist Ian Prowse, Amsterdam belong to a melodic British pop-rock tradition, with songwriting rooted in English rock and occasional folk inflections. The band began appearing on the Liverpool and London scenes in the early 2000s after winning an NME contest for unsigned groups, and later received radio airplay, including on the BBC. Their path also crossed with Elvis Costello, who invited them to perform with him on television and on stage. Following an initial independent phase with Attitunes (2001) and The Curse (2002) — first released online and later reissued — Amsterdam released The Journey in 2005, the album that accompanied their move to national visibility, followed by Arm in Arm in 2008. Over the years Amsterdam has continued to perform in an expanded lineup often presented as Ian Prowse & Amsterdam, maintaining a pop-rock core while incorporating more keyboards, flute and violin, which gives the songs a broader colour without abandoning their direct, narrative grounding.
