Tristwch Y Fenywod

Formed in Leeds in 2022, Tristwch y Fenywod develops a Welsh-language repertoire positioned between gothic rock, post-punk and darkwave, with concise songwriting, taut bass lines, restrained drumming and a violin that accentuates the group's melancholic dimension. The trio brings together Gretchen Aury, Sydney Koke and Layla Legard, musicians who have also been involved in other projects on the British and Canadian indie scenes, notably Guttersnipe, The Courtneys, Hawthonn and Hexham Heads. Tristwch y Fenywod first made themselves heard live in Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, before playing in Wales at Bangor in 2023, then extending their dates to several European cities in 2024 and 2025 — from Brussels to Zurich, Lyon, Lausanne, Leipzig, Utrecht and London. Recorded in 2023 at Hohm Studio in Bradford with Ross Halden, the band's first album, titled Tristwch y Fenywod, was released in August 2024 on Night School Records. In this way Tristwch y Fenywod inscribes a gothic aesthetic within a distinctly Welsh framework, both through the language and the project's atmosphere.
