Barbican Estate

Formed in Tokyo in 2019, Barbican Estate brings together Kazuki Toneri on guitar and sitar, Miri on bass and vocals, and Koh Hamada on drums and percussion. The trio is part of Tokyo’s underground scene, where they play regularly while developing a songwriting approach that sits between psychedelic rock, noise rock and more atmospheric experiments. Their music combines drones, hallucinatory soundscapes, taut rhythms and vivid lyrical work, maintaining a structured approach despite dense textures. In 2020 Barbican Estate released an EP and three singles, then issued their debut album Way Down East in 2021. The group draws on Japanese psychedelia and noise rock, as well as certain strands of American experimentalism, with references extending beyond music to classic cinema, literature and architecture. This blend gives Barbican Estate a wide, often abrasive sound in which repetition, rhythmic tension and shifts in atmosphere occupy a central place.
