Beibei Wang
Born in Hefei, China, in 1986, Beibei Wang has developed a career as a percussionist that spans Chinese tradition, contemporary classical music and the orchestral repertoire. Trained at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she earned a bachelor’s and then a master’s degree in Chinese percussion, Beibei Wang moved to London in 2011 to continue her studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Her international trajectory began in the late 2000s with Tan Dun—first in Tea: A Mirror of Soul in 2008, then at the premiere of Earth Concerto at the Grafenegg Festival in 2009. The same year she performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the UK premiere of Tang Jianping’s Sacred Fire at the Barbican. Since then Beibei Wang has appeared as a soloist with several orchestras and ensembles, notably the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Manchester Collective, in programmes where percussion engages in dialogue with the orchestra, contemporary composing techniques and textures inspired by materials and gestures from Chinese music. Her discography includes 4 Seasonings (2019), with As You Hear, Veryan Weston and Pei Ann Yeoh, and The Endless Dance (2026), a duo with Hannah Peel. In 2022 she also served on the jury for the percussion final of BBC Young Musician.
