Mariam Rezaei

Born in Gateshead in northeast England and of Anglo‑Iranian background, Mariam Rezaei has, since the early 2010s, developed work situated between experimental music, free improvisation, hip‑hop and subverted electronic club forms. Trained initially in classical piano, she later made turntablism and composition for records the centre of her practice, in an approach that mixes notation, real‑time sample manipulation, scratching, beat juggling and sound research. Based in Newcastle, Rezaei has also worked in the experimental arts by directing projects such as TOPH, TUSK Fringe and TUSK North, while composing for ensemble, theatre and orchestra. Her career has taken her to both contemporary music contexts and improvisation stages, with collaborations including Pat Thomas, Jennifer Walshe, Gabriele Mitelli and Maria Chávez. She is also part of the Turntable Trio with Evicshen and Maria Chávez, and of The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters. On the discography side, Mariam Rezaei released the solo record FRACTURED in 2024, an album that extends this fragmented, dense and mobile writing in which the turntable becomes simultaneously a rhythmic instrument, a source of collage and an improvisational space.
