Charlotte Church
Born in Cardiff, Wales, Charlotte Church first gained attention as a young soprano in the classical crossover field, performing sacred arias, traditional songs and opera excerpts. She was revealed to a wider public in 1997 after a television performance of “Pie Jesu,” and began her discography with Voice of an Angel (1998), followed by Charlotte Church (1999), Dream a Dream (2000) and Enchantment (2001), albums where classical repertoire is paired with accessible arrangements and some more popular inflections. After the compilation Prelude: The Best of Charlotte Church (2002), she shifted toward pop with the 2003 single “The Opera Song (Brave New World),” recorded with Jurgen Vries, and then released Tissues and Issues (2005), marked by a more direct pop-rock songwriting approach. Church returned with Back to Scratch (2010) and, in the early 2010s, pursued a more independent aesthetic through the EPs ONE (2012), Two (2013), Three (2013) and Four (2014), where her voice sits in atmospheric pop tinged with alternative rock and Celtic touches. In addition to music, she has worked in television and performed live again in the UK and North America, notably at SXSW in 2013.
