Charge 69
Formed in Metz in 1993, Charge 69 brought together Caps (bassist of PKRK), Laurent (then with Skaferlatine) and Spirou (from Molodoï) at a time when the French punk scene was reorganizing after the alternative wave. Initially focused on covers of British bands such as UK Subs, Cockney Rejects and Stiff Little Fingers, the band quickly settled into a four-piece and moved toward direct punk rock influenced by the street punk scene and oi!, with occasional forays into reggae. The release of the EP Patchwork, followed by Apparence jugée in 1997 and Vos lois ne sont pas nos règles in 2000, established the group on French and German stages, where they performed intensively through festivals, tours and split EPs. Across lineup changes — including singers like Gilles and later Vérole (from Les Cadavres) and the return of guitarist Jeremya — Charge 69 sustained an active concert schedule, collaborated with artists such as Charlie Harper of UK Subs and the Québécois band La Gâchette, and participated in shared tours with acts like Skarface and Banane Metalik. Their repertoire combines socially conscious lyrics, everyday narratives and reflections on the punk scene itself, built on a melodic yet rough foundation that links them to both the French punk legacy and European street punk currents.
